We look at Roger Birkman’s genius as he elected to utilize the tendency of individuals to self-report in a positive light rather than trying to “correct” for that tendency. One of the significant contributions of his tool is the identification and definition of social desirability. We will examine how The Birkman Method® describes social desirability and the additional power TBM brings to your practice through a more in-depth understanding of the relationship between behavior and the social desirability domain.
While we do take a brief look at the Components in terms of their derivation and definition, most of our time is devoted to the dynamic known as perspective, which is about the difference, or gap, between Usual and Need. In this section we will show you how to build on your proficiency with standard interpretive techniques by incorporating perspective into the process; and show you how the component Challenge is the overall indicator of perspective. Speaking of Challenge, we will also show you how the Challenge component is scored, and discuss ways to utilize the information that Challenge offers in ways that are different from what you’ve heard (learned) before.

Participants for The Science Behind The Birkman Method course must have completed an advanced level course, be Birkman Certification AND must meet one of the following criteria:
- Active Birkman Consultant for 5 or more years
- 30 hours of Birkman Professional Development Training
- Ph.D. in Psychology or other Behavioral Science field
